CQUniversity (CQU) is an Australian public university with a campus presence in every mainland state. With more than 30,000 students from over 70 countries it is recognised as Australia’s most inclusive university; it has some of the highest ratios of students from disadvantaged, mature age, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and first-in-family backgrounds.

Challenges

CQU wanted to implement two new scholarly research and data systems (Research Master and Sympletic) together to act as a library. Alongside this, CQU wished to transition from hosting their systems in-house to migrate to a cloud platform. However, this transition would require complex integration that its library vendor could not provide. Moreover, CQU’s development would require a number of complex system sync processes and integration.

The Solution

Catalyst worked with CQU to move their system hosting from on premise to a cloud platform, Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a technical partner, the Catalyst team ensured a successful technical transition and strategic roll-out of several changes and improvements with minimal disruption to users – this was key as CQU’s pages receive an average number of 8,000 per minute (at peak) and 900k page views per week.

Together we have strategically planned and managed a range of Learning Management Systems and ePortfolio systems across a number of environments, improving their learners experience with both Totara and Moodle. A key customisation and integration was improved research traceability; this transparency allows the Australian Government to recognise and fund CQU University.

Our Moodle technical experts were able to make complex integrations look easy alongside improved functional and efficient workflows; all updates and improvements were carried while actively in-use by students and staff.
